The importance of athletics (and a few nations) to future Commonwealth Games : Comments

By Chris Lewis, published 1/8/2022

But certain nations will prove crucial for any future CG success, notably the UK countries, Australia, New Zealand and Canada which have hosted every CG since 1930, with the only exceptions being Jamaica 1966, Malaysia 1998 and India 2010.

A dog can run faster than humans. A seal can swim faster than humans. Our physical prowess is not what is important to our species. Science, art, philosophy, technology and other products of human intelligence has made us what we are. Those are what define our species. Athletic games are lots of fun, and we can enjoy them. However, let's just enjoy them and not make a fuss over them. Let's get rid of the Olympics, the Commonwealth games and similar diversions along with the useless nonsense associated with them of nationalist rivalry, commercialisation and vulgar kitsch.

A pretty spell-binding collection of facts and figures from CL, a master of research!

I don’t hold an opinion one way or the other on this issue. Time will work out the details I’m sure, as it seems to be doing in its usual messy way.

I'm with David f. Sport is dead boring, and there is no decent TV while it is on. Mental masturbation for the herd.

The Roman Empire gave the plebs the Colosseum and welfare (hence the expression 'bread and circuses') to keep them amused and docile. The West is doing the same thing, particularly in Australia, and it will go the same way as the Roman Empire.

As others have noted the games are dead boring. Some are clearly drug assisted with all elements of fair competition removed! And the games are way too commercialized. With the free to air TV interrupting their commercials with a few minutes of comp. I'd sooner watch the footy!
