Boris Johnson was a long-term mistake : Comments

By Peter Bowden, published 22/7/2022

Johnson showed his full colours early, and we or at least the Brits, should have been warned. But they were taken in by an immense intellect, a clear ambition and obvious capabilities.

On several measures the UK is doing better than some major EU27 countries. On the whole Brexit was a good move in retrospect and Johnson's successors Conservative or Labour seem unlikely to wind it back.

A more apt historical analogy could be Churchill who lost the 1945 election. With WW2 he 'got it done' then the Brits didn't think he was the right man for what came later. History now holds Churchill in the highest regard. Johnson is still in his prime and could surprise us with new moves. I wouldn't rule out a comeback if subsequent PMs disappoint.

Apart from Johnson playing the drunken fool on stage, and paying for them in measure, the similarities of the British Empire decline to that of the Roman Empire decline are apt.

Britain is declining at a much faster pace than did Rome, along with the US empire. Declining Empires are a historical norm, how much energy should be invested in the autopsy?

The decline of empires is always preceded by moral decline and a rise in corruption.
Johnson was simply the drunken flag bearer of our British heritage on the home turf.
Next please!

Dan.

These lefties just have to have a go at anyone not like them - even if it is someone who has nothing to do with Australia and who cannot be influenced by Australian voters. Johnson, Biden: who cares. You want to analyse leaders? Stick to your own; they are the only ones we have a smidgen of control over, and then only once every three years. Our "long-term mistake" is Anthony Albanese. Before that, it was Scott Morrison. We have more than enough problems with our own duds without fussing about those of other countries.

Simply put, people who lust for power should never ever have it!

The best leaders have leadership thrust on them and seem to, come the day come the man, type leaders.

There's no doubt that Johnson was a giant intellect, with a giant ego that was a danger to shipping? And a danger to Great Britain which in all likelihood, could soon become, Little Britain?
