The axing of Leunig : Comments

By Dara Macdonald, published 1/11/2021

This week we learn that there is no room in the editorial pages of the paper whose motto is 'Independent. Always.' for independent thought.

Leunig has always been a lefty working in lefty media. It seems that the Left is now turning on its own, as predicted. He is a good one for them to start with because he was not a left 'Leuny', as the offending cartoon demonstrated. A warning to the real looneys to stay in line.

I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiments expressed in this piece!

Censorship by any name, is still censorship!

Leunig said what many of us were thinking, but couldn't say with words! least we be sued for defamation?

Which is also in so many instances, barely veiled suppression of free speach here in Oz?

Good article.. The sad thing is they are left woke looneys have moved form being ludicrous to being dangerous. What next, public burnings of cartoons and may be even the cartoonists? At this rate, even the Chinese/Taliban will be regarded as tolerant by comparison to the woke cultists.

I have never been a great fan of Leunig, but he is good and that cartoon about the dropped baby and mobile phone is a classic!

it is said that the revolution eventually ends up eating it's own children, and Leunig is an example of that. Leunig is a card carrying lefty. But I always like his cartoons, which were always kind of cute. And sometimes he indirectly threw a brickbat at the right and the left, which really was quite profound.

It was once said (I think it was Voltaire} who remarked that what today we would call "leftist" people were the most intelligent, witty, broad minded, and good natured people he had ever met. While the people who supported the monarchy (which today we would call "the right") were puritanical, dogmatic, one eyed, without humour, and constantly espousing moral absolutes.

Today it is the other way around.

Leunig is a victim of his own ideology. he once joined the chorus condemning Bill Leaks cartoon which showed an aboriginal man, confronted by an aboriginal policeman holding his son, who tells the aboriginal man he should take more responsibility for his sons behaviour. The aboriginal replies, "Righto, what's his name then?"

Now Leunig is in the same boat as his peer Bill Leak. When it comes to satire, the left today will not stand for even the most tangential criticism. Even from a political cartoonist. Political cartoonists have always been much loved in the western world, because even in the days of King George when any criticism of the government was not tolerated, publications like Punch with its cartoons, were the only legitimate way that criticism could be presented.

But in The people's democratic republic of Victoria today, even cartoonists need to be disappeared.

Not to dip our pens in ink

Drawing cartoons in the clink.
