Plastic can be put to so many helpful and efficient ways. Waste plastic should be burnt by municipalities.

A good thought promoting article on outcomes of the manufacturing industry.

What it seemed to miss though, was the inevitable outcome to the consumer of the waste product, and which consumer is actually behind the massive scale of industry pollution.
It was correct to point out third world countries as the major contributor.

The current regime which forces all the costs of pollution onto the bottom level of consumer, and punishes them with a burden of disposal costs is totally unfair in social terms.

That burden should be absolutely taken up by the manufacture of the pollutant and the costs passed on down the distribution chain to the consumer, leaving the product more expensive, but the responsibility for disposal of end product shouldered entirely by the manufacturer and the supply chain.
Disposal of waste product at the tip face should in my estimation, be absolutely free, and already prepaid by the producer of the waste., and not the consumer.

I thought burning polyurethane released cyanide. I doubt that biodegradable plastic will end up on every supermarket item, either through limited supply or lack of water tightness. Attempts at 'biodegradable' cardboard coated soft drink bottles are laughable. It's one of those things where we think there is a technofix but we're dreaming.

Since plastic comes from oil and gas burning it sends carbon from underground into the atmosphere ie it's an indirect fossil fuel. If CCS worked at scale it could be a solution but it's not. I'm not sure what supermarkets will look like in 2050; maybe bring your own containers.

Our responsibility for waste plastics is almost zero compared with the rubbish going into the sea from SE Asia. It's only the self-hating enemies within who claim otherwise. Life without plastics would be much more expensive and inconvenient

This knowledgeable old bloke is onto something but he might have a bit of a fight convincing the rabid greenies.

Considering the libellous claim this article makes about Christiana Figueres, I am quite surprised that this article was published here in its current form.

This article starts off quite well, but soon descends into a rant of misinformation about the effects of CO2. No doubt many an ignoramus on this board loves reading this misinformation because it conforms to their prejudice, but wouldn't it be better to tell people the truth?

Numerous books have been written on this very important topic including Plastic Soup by Michiel Roscam Abbing - others are featured on the Amazon review of this book.
The Plastic Soup Foundation was set up in association with the book
