US-ISRAELI INTELLIGENCE RELATIONS NEED IMPROVING

David's statement:

deserves further context.

Director Burns was mainly in Israel, in early August 2021, to discuss the following with Bennett, Gantz and Mossad.

The Israelis scaled back intelligence cooperation with the US in January 2021 following Biden's Inauguration. The Netanyahu administration limited its intelligence relationship with Washington almost as soon as Biden took office.

The Israelis decided to scale back intelligence-sharing with Washington in order to keep the Biden administration in the dark about Israel's latest efforts to disrupt Iran's nuclear program.

Following the demise of much of the US intelligence network in Iran, in 2019, the US relied/relies heavily on Israeli intelligence when it comes to following developments inside Iran. Israel hopes, by denying the Biden administration information about developments inside Iran, Israel can prevent the White House from making drastic changes to former President Trump’s policy on Iran.

Before the sabotage attack against Iran’s Natanz nuclear plant in April 2021 Israel gave Washington only 2 hours’ notice of the plan. This change of policy on intelligence-sharing by the Israeli government represents a violation of a longstanding, unwritten agreement to at least advise Washington of such covert operations. Such advice normally gives Washington an opportunity to challenge specific courses of Israeli covert action.

Israeli officials said that the reason why Washington was not given earlier notice about the attack on the Natanz nuclear plant was because of fears that it would be leaked by the US. US officials have leaked information before about pending Israeli covert operations, according to the Israelis.

So Director Burns met with PM Bennett, Defence Minister Gantz and Mossad in an attempt to reset the US-Israel intelligence relationship since the Natanz operation. But relations still remain tense.

"On Friday, 14 May 2021, settlers and soldiers raided two villages, ‘Urif and Iskaka, in two separate incidents. The settlers, some of whom were armed, threw stones at homes and local residents who had come out of their homes and threw stones at the settlers to defend themselves and their property and drive them away.

Yet, years of experience show that it is bound to close as simply another part of Israel’s whitewash mechanism."

The forces then continued to Za’atut south of the village of al-Buweib, where they demolished a mosque under construction."
