Were the US and Australia robbed of FIFA tournament, and what to do about it : Comments

Corruption is endemic in all major international sports from drug taking to match fixing, it seems that the entire sporting supply chain is diseased.

It's almost a given that there's a corrupt element deeply embedded in football and only because of the money this sport generates as extremely popular, televised spectator sport.

Eliminating corruption from sport or government or commercial speculation? Almost as difficult as passing a camel through the eye of a needle and requires as the first cab off the rank, cleaning up corrupt governments and their subservient public officials. By a clean sweep of all current, compliant and complicit encumberments!

When we have achieved that as a first priority goal and on a global scale! We can then attack corruption and match-fixing in all manner of sport!

I cannot help but see parallels between sports: Olympics, both Summer and Winter, Football, cycling and presumably every other international tournament.

I also imagine parallels and linkages between financial corruption and all forms of cheating, whether direct, via bribery of officials and players, or via drugs, or less obvious nepotism, favouritism, etc.

In essence, my current position is that all international sports organisations, top to bottom, are corrupt in a number of ways, unless and until proved otherwise.

That would require independent, beyond arm's length audit and policing of the administrators and players, which never seems to happen. Drug policing is an excellent example of failure over years and decades, eg the still on-going in Russian Olympic teams, right back to the former East German and Chinese experiences. EG international cycling, which possibly will never remove the stain of drug cheating.

Of course, none of this funny money and drug-taking stuff happens locally, in Australian competitions... does it, Essendon? And sandpaper is never countenanced in cricket?

Maybe we could do better at home in Australia before we point fingers at overseas competitors.

Frankly, I see little point in spending public money on international sports. There are hundreds of other mouths to feed in education, local sports, environment, social programs and health, to say nothing of infrastructure and transport.
