Liberalism in and of itself is not the cause of the problem. The principal cause of the problem is the childish and adolescent anti-culture produced by TV.
And of the best multi-faceted descriptions/explanations of the situation we are collectively in is provided by William Irwin Thompson in his book Coming Into Being: Artifacts and Texts in the Evolution of Consciousness. The first chapter titled Our Contemporary Predicament And Our Present Evolution of Consciousness is a brilliant description of our situation.
