A Saudi-Iran oil war could break up OPEC : Comments

By Irina Slav, published 27/8/2018

Saudi Arabia and Iran are highly unlikely to put down their arms, even if it means cutting prices to uncomfortably low levels.

An article from oilprice.com predicting a fall in prices. Wonders will never cease.

Prices will fall because it suits Trump and the US that they fall. And the US is now the pivot around which oil rotates. They are becoming the largest energy exporter in the world and therefore are able to influence all other players. They want oil to remain relatively low so as to pressure Iran and infuriate Russia.

The Saudis can live with that better than either of the other major producers and they desperately want the US to succeed in pulling Iran into line.

The fracking revolution is changing the world.

Australia as usual refuses to take part. We really have the worst ruling class in our history.

Low oil prices are bad news for Iran, as well as for Russia and Venezuela. But once Assad destroys Idlib and drives many more hundreds of thousands into exile (and probably into Turkey), Iran will control that crescent from the Afghan border across to the Mediterranean, not to mention their involvement in Yemen. Will the Saudis (and ultimately the Turks) tolerate that domination ? I don't think so.

If (and when) war does break out between the Sunnis and the Shi'ites, Alan B., it won't stop at those borders either. Pakistan will be drawn into war against Iran as well. Perhaps India may get involved, to help out Iran against Pakistan. And the situation in Afghanistan is hardly going to be resolved by capitulating to the Taliban.

If Iran and the Saudis do go to war, their first targets will be each others' oil fields. Up will go oil prices. That would please Trump and the Russians. Is that how it's going to go ?
