Review: A Genuinely Theological Church : Comments

By Peter Sellick, published 1/6/2018

Keeping the substance of the gospel before us is not an easy task in an age flooded with ideology, cultural warfare, rampant populism and political correctness.

Maybe, but only if we return to the church that existed immediately after the crucifixion and before that sun worshipping pagan Constantine, put his stamp, stooges, the confessional, celibacy and personal ownership on/in it!
And based on eyewitness accounts, like the gospel according to Mary Magdelene? The advocacy of esoteric Christians? And the mighty irrefutable truth!
Otherwise, why bother? Just hang on to the witch doctor (hell, fire and damnation) practice that has replaced it, replete with centralized command and control!

"Theology is the church's ongoing historically-shaped, critical, imaginative and constructive reflection on the biblical witness to early Christianity's puzzling proclamation of Jesus of Nazareth as Israel's Messiah and the world's reconciling Lord."

If you believe that Christ worked miracles, then there's nothing puzzling about that 'proclamation' at all. And if you DON'T believe that Christ worked miracles, then there's no particular reason for you to believe ANY other details of the accounts given in the Bible, including the supposed 'proclamation'.

We have plenty of examples of religions being fabricated and imposed upon people who were much more sophisticated than first-century tribespeople and artisans. If the phenomena needs to be studied at all, then psychology is the discipline to do so.

But to take the magic out of religion and then pretend there's something left requires breathtaking arrogance.

Having more of the Gospel in theology is a great idea. Full support of that.
