The commercial heavens: the new Australian space agency : Comments

By Binoy Kampmark, published 16/5/2018

Space has been turned into patriotism, cash and incentives; and there is a sense that Australia has been lagging.

A good idea that could earn billions if properly managed by a hard-headed pragmatist and in just one place as near to the Equator as possible. The academic selected to kick-start this agency wants to spread it all over Australia to share the benefits all while quite stupidly adding the tyranny of distance and fuel/transport costs to a massively complex manufacturing paradigm! Queensland would be ideal and could utilise Bartle Ferry as a springboard for a rail gun catapult up the side of Queensland's highest mountain, to launch a reusable scramjet-powered Delta winged bomber. That then launches a reusable shuttle or rocket to contain costs. After all, all we want to do is place income earning satellites in orbit or recover those whose decaying orbit has rendered them a potential threat? 50 million? Need ten times that if we're really serious!? And just for starters! Alan B.

Like many, I was excited at the possibility of an Australian space program when I first heard about it - but on reflection, Australia's a tiny country, population-wise, in comparison to the other players. We can't compete, we can only really collaborate, which is a good thing, and displays science at its best. Such a program would need to benefit from political collaboration, or bipartisanship, too. It's hard to be too optimistic about this, in the face of all the evidence..

What!...where?...Australia has got a lot of space...just walk out in any direction and you'll find all manner of space,
Anything seemingly worthless is reserved for the indigenous, and anything of value is reserved for a later date when someone figures how to get their hands on it.
