The Plan your Brisbane game launched recently by the Brisbane City Council shows us that for every planning decision we make there are trade-offs.

Well, what the article does not expose, is the extent and type of developments proposed for the established suburbs.

What actually happens with inner city developments, is a catering to money through the alteration of the local environment, to the point where lifestyle and amenity expectations of one social set, are dominated by a new and emerging cultural shift suitable to a narrow, and more wealthy “other”. And yes, this situation is a war as such.

Development is actually an ideology. A powerful group of ideologue, using money for muscle and political influence. Well recognised among politicians and in the community generally; and should be feared!

Sorry, can't agree with much of this. But see the real problem as too many unproductive fingers in too few pies. And all demanding an onerous fee for their participation or proxy/permission? Other than that, are the needs of developers and councils, state governments for unearned entitlement revenue? Alan B.

"So where are we going to put the 1,300 plus people who are moving to our city every month" asks Natalie?

Put them on a slow boat back to China, Africa, Melbourne or where ever the hell they came from, we neither need or want them.

People of Brisbane have built the city they want, & have no desire to change it. If politicians & developers want something different, it is time to change the politicians, & stick the developers on that slow boat to China with the unwanted immigrants.

The author's point about NIMBYism is taken.
However, there is no excuse for much of the short term shonky substandard development that is going on. This degrades our city and makes it less likely that people will want to live or visit it.

Rapacious rent seeking, and low common denominator development including corruption are feeding a NIMBY culture.

It does not take so much more money to build well, to maintain green spaces, and to ensure an ongoing amenity, which people will want to live in.

It does require a higher sensitivity and culture. Town planners, the BCC and State Government should take a lead in this.
