By Binoy Kampmark, published 9/3/2018

In the scheme of things, Australia has deputised as regional bully for imperial powers since it became an outpost of the British empire.

Another anti-Australian rant. East Timor will always be “on a drip”. It is indeed a “failed state”, another tin pot island Australia foolishly aided in its delusion that it could be a 'nation' – with a population of 1.3 million! What passes for 'authority' on this little island – sorry, part of a little island - is often heard to rubbish Australia, despite all the hand outs it takes from us. Ingrates! They would still be under the boot of the Indonesians if it were not for Australia. The Indonesians are probably laughing at us and saying, “Serve you right”.

Well, we are connected to our continental shelf as is every other land mass and as long as I have lived what was in the continental shelf remained the property of those who owned or controlled the land mass. With the line of demarcation being where that continental shelf ended.

We could if we were the bullies Binroy describes, take a leaf from the Chinese development manual and build a few artificial Islands to underline and emphasize those continental shelf boundaries and then some!

Instead we've torn up the old agreements, both of them and renegotiated a new one, that East Timor recently signed off on. If It had been down to me, I just would have conceded the entire resource, but not the already agreed, natural boundaries. And the natural trough that marks it.

That said, the only bully on the block acting for another imperialist, expansionist nation? Then surely it has to be the querulous, never satisfied, political activist, sh!t stirring, divisive Author?

Note well, his citique comes hard on the heels of, a new negotiated resource sharing agreement!. Which underlines the previous sentence and condemnation!

Binoy,
Why was East Timor "liberated" as you say.
Could it be because that "regional bully" risked the lives of its young men to liberate it.
You, like half educated young people who get so much attention for their ravings nowadays would say we owe the East Timorese for the assistance given to Australian soldiers during WW11.

So it was a case of Timorese helping us not a case of young Australians dying so that Timorese could be free of Japanese military regime which enslaved the inhabitants of every country it occupied.

Would it not be nice to have some truth once in a while.

Oops,

When you said a failed island state I thought you meant Tasmania.
