The power of grant money : Comments

By Don Aitkin, published 31/1/2018

Reading 'No End of a Lesson' brought back so many memories of life after the ARC, and indeed during its formation.

Money is still the root of all evil, and it is turning science into rubbish. Most scientists (there are notable exceptions) seem to be persons of ill repute and, like politicians, are generally ignored, as is anyone who has jumped on the AGW bandwagon and raided the public purse; not to mention bumping up the price of electricity to people who cannot afford it. Scientists are the new pariahs.

Some of our best ideas/products came from university research labs and from public funding, not just here, but around the world.

What we haven't been too successful at, is commercialising these ideas and products here. With other economies reaping most of the benefits of this research, where we punch well above our weight!

Accurate records tell us that the oceans have become more acidic and as much as 2.5C warmer in places/ocean currents. With tropical species spreading ever further and closer to the poles. With cool water kelp forests being seriously reduced in traditional habitat?

CO2 is we're informed, way up in uncharted territory?

As for global warming. We are subject to normal climate variations.

When the great big solar furnace in the sky waxes, the joint warms up and as occurred in times past, forests grew in Antarctica, as demonstrated by the fossil record.

Conversely when it wanes, the joint cools with advancing polar and glacial ice, and even an ice age of indeterminate length. And according to NASA, our sun has been in a waning phase since the mid seventies.

Yes the joint can still warm a little even then due to natural climate variations and El nino. Except for 2017, the third hottest year on record, when a La nina system prevailed and while the great big solar furnace in the sky went even deeper into its current waning phase.

And where/when, allegedly intelligent men would stop trying to tell us that the effect of burning fossil fuels is benign!

As they also did when trying and for decades to protect the interests of deadly asbestos, and always harm causing big tobacco!

It beggars belief what allegedly honest and upright illustrious academics will do for alleged research grants and postgraduate retirement consultancies.

Don, we have far better, less costly, less harmful options, than coal oil and gas!

the swamp is well overdue for draining. Unfortunately as has been seen in the gw scam the dregs go to the bottom. The billion dollar funded abc sees the scum rise to the top of the swamp.

We've heard credible reports that the academics employed by the asbestos industry and big tobacco, were telling their masters one thing and joe public something else. Recently we learned the fossil fuel industry was giving a similar performance.

We really do need to drain the swamp of the fact free numbskulls/scum that inhabit it and rush to print with unestablished assumption and assertion replacing factual evidence!

Particularly when the actual facts are at complete odds with their abusive narrative.

Labeling someone a grant stealing crook in the light of any compelling evidence or substantive facts to support such wild assertions, won't turn blatant pork pies into establish fact!

Labels say nought but the labelers unfounded prejudice.

That would be great Alan, if it were true.

Unfortunately despite 10s of billions wasted, they have not managed to find a single piece of evidence that could possibly convince anyone other than those who want to be convinced.

If ever they do find any real evidence, other than in their garbage in/garbage out computer models, I'll be the first on board.

The most frightening thing is where we don't know, what we don't know. I know a hell of a lot in a few small subject areas. Almost every time I hear some academic/scientist rabbiting on about one of these areas I find they are a hell of a long way from knowing what they are talking about.

This worries me, in case in all those thousands of subject areas where I know very little, the academics/scientists are just as ill informed.

I believed in CO2 caused global warming, until I did a bit of math myself, & found it all bulldust. I then found the fallacy of CFCs causing the ozone hole.

I have gained one new belief. Never trust an academic/scientist with dollar signs in his eyes, & today that is unfortunately a huge percentage

Thanks, Don, for the reminder of the scurrilous conduct of James Cook UNiversity, in its support of the climate fraud, and its shameful treatment of Robert Carter. It is great to see Professor Ridd step up, undaunted by the shameful threats of JCU.
