Castro’s hidden legacy : Comments

By William Hill, published 15/12/2016

In Castro’s Cuba homosexual acts were a criminal offense. Gay Cubans were denied the right to become members of the Cuban Communist Party, a policy that by many accounts still persists.

One might have attempted to defend this part of Castro's legacy, if there was any element whatsoever, of choice, in gender bias!

We are born who and what we are! No ifs, buts or maybes! And to vilify or persecute folks for daring to be born different! Demonstrates as nothing else can! An unusual degree of abysmal ignorance!

Even so, willful ignorance is no excuse, and may he rot in hell for all eternity for his inexcusable excesses!

Others remain free to judge him less harshly, if they are able?

You mean his legacy against gays is in part defensible?

I admit not, to understanding, many of the crimes or the excessive controls he'd placed on the Cuban population ? I understand he did many positive things for the country, in terms of developing science, medicine, and education - conversely he exercised very tight controls over his people and it was rumored he introduced 'death squads' in order to maintain his iron grip over the country, as well as greatly strengthening ties with the then USSR.

Though before Fidel CASTRO, Cubans had to contend with the likes of Fulgencio BATISTA and Osvaldo TORRADO, both of whom were manifestly corrupt, and were very much submissive to many of the American organised crime figures, living and operating between Miami and Havana.

I know nothing of CASTRO's thinking or ideology concerning homosexual males or their behaviour, nothing at all. Though personally, I don't agree nor accept the practice of sodomy, nevertheless it's now legal in this country and as such all homosexuals, whatever their various proclivities may be, nobody has the right to either victimise nor physically assault them, simply because they're practicing their particular variation of homosexual behaviour. And I for one thoroughly support that law.
