Victoria's Equal Opportunity Act: inherent requirements and the problem of discrimination : Comments

By Mark Sneddon, published 28/9/2016

So the state would get to decide if a Jewish school can refuse to hire a Muslim maths teacher (and vice versa) and whether a Christina church can refuse to hire a Buddhist as a youth leader or pastoral care worker.

Yep, these acts certainly threaten the existence of the church, but to be fair , it was a little bit naive for Christians in the old days to believe that they could separate church and state and still think that the Christian worldview would have an impact on the culture in any meaningful way.

We regularly employ council members and without knowing their political affiliations or belief systems, and only on history and merit!

If we are going to outlaw any religious belief system holding sway in some private schools, then we ought to outlaw them all, and on the grounds that even the most benign belief, is going to conflict with the belief or practices of others! And needs to be replaced with a secular system, where religious teaching/instruction is left to the parents and in out of school hours church attendance!

Anything less is little more than a recipe for some particularly aggressive cultures imposing their MEDIEVAL brand of religious intolerance on everyone else! And the very reason some enlightened leaders chose secular government and in direct opposition to the will of the dominant religious culture or RADICALIZING Madrassas!

Thereby ensuring that peaceful cohabitation was not only possible! But the order of the day! And an essential precursor to actual equality!

I think it will take some time before people stop discriminating against other religions.
