Gender pay equality in sport: a market distortion under the guise of equity : Comments

By Brendan O'Reilly, published 24/6/2016

One possible solution to issues of gender equity in sport would be to make all sports competitions unisex, with prize money and other conditions totally based on audience demand and competition on the sports field.

Professional sport needs audience participation to generate the prize money associated with various sports! If we could have competitions that are gender neutral or televised as mixed competition, more gender equity might apply?

Even so, we have no mechanism to force their participation or indeed, get them to open the pocket book to support, view mixed competition or gender specific sport or just junior sport! Simply put, the pay outcomes are only ever as good as the reliant and ultra critical audience participation! Half of which are arguably female!

None of which are assisted by high profile drug cheats or bookie involvement, match fixing or patently massaged results courtesy of some very controversial referee decisions or howler umpiring?

As for the pay gap, those earning their income playing professional sports need to understand certain realities and make their own decisions based on marshalled facts, which by the way has produced some multi million dollar incomes for some professional female athletes!

the failure the recognise that men are generally physically stronger, have more ball skills and generally play sports at a much higher level makes pay equality a joke. If the women want the same pay they should compete at the same levels We have already lowered physical standards for the army and police force. Obviously this is tax payer funded money so most don't care. Recently I understand an u/15 boys side embarassed the Australian women's soccer team 5 nil.hmm.

btw the men's netball get as much money as womens?

Brendan you did miss the fact that women compete at the very highest level at 3 day eventing, the toughest equestrian sport, not just dressage. Every one of our Olympic gold medal winning eventing teams had at least one lady rider.

However this is the exception. Apart from a little equestrian, & there isn't much of that, & perhaps very occasionally surfing Iron Woman, or triathlon, there is not another female sporting activity I would stay in front of a TV to watch.

I am horrified, but not surprised at the blatant vote buying by Shorten with women's sport coverage, but do find it no different to Turnbull promising a football stadium to Townsville. None of this is the business of government. While there may be an argument for encouraging more healthy sporting activity by the general public, elite sport by either sex should sink or swim by it's own efforts, not taxpayer funds.

The wages of sportsmen are as direct result of what their fans are prepared to pay. If women feel strongly enough about this, then they should shell out to support their local women's team.

PS, do we want equal sponsorship for paralympians?

There is nothing more influential in the business of sport than bums on seats, and the fact is that apart from say the likes of tennis and netball, people are simply not interested in women's sports.

End of story!

Getting so tired of hearing women's groups and feminists banging on about this fake or non-existent gender pay gap and all the other lies that peddle, like the fake epidemic of domestic violence against women.

Ever since July 1985 in Australia it has been illegal to pay a woman a lower hourly rate to a man if they are both doing the same jobs. Notwithstanding the odd greedy employer, women have been paid equally since 1985. End of story!

However, because women refuse to work the dirty, dangerous jobs or even the highly technical STEM field jobs, which are all much more highly paid, plus the very long hours, the average wage of all women in the country is lower than the average wage of men.

This is a truth and there is nothing that can be done about it. Except of course, women decide to actually put in the work and hours and earn more.

So women's groups, feminists and their deceitful political counterparts, lie through their back teeth to the general public about the wages of women and they demand that women's wages/salary be artificially raised to equal that of men, without the women being worth that much to the employer. This is insane!

Sport is no different!

If women want to earn the exact same amount as men, then let's get rid of sex based sports and women start playing against and with men, as well as playing the same number of Sets as men in Tennis, plus be prepared to get hurt like men on the football field.

If they want to continue as they are, then women most definitely should be paid less than men.

Sport today is a business and businesses need to survive. Very successful businesses, pay more money to the people who actually generate that wealth.

Even Ronda Rousey agrees with this and made that known in no uncertain terms in this interview question by a foolish feminist reporter who was booed by many in the audience for her question: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5xRHz8Su6E

When will this insanity stop?!
