Upper house, not four year terms, would have saved Newman government : Comments

By Seath Holswich, published 11/2/2016

I encourage Queensland voters on March 19 to vote no to four year terms, whilst Queensland remains without an Upper House.

An upper house would help, but a much more effective assurance of democracy, and insurance against rogue governance of one sort or another, would be proportional representation.

With proportional representation, Labor would have been in a much better prepared position to govern now.

Dreams!

There may be an argument for fixed terms, to prevent simple opportunism by governments. However, I know of no argument that four year terms will make our system more democratic. It is simply a way of preventing elected parties from being accountable. In the absence of an upper house, this is especially important. All thinking Queenslanders should reject this proposal.
