By Tom Quirk, published 4/11/2015

The Melbourne Cup shows why governments and taxpayers lose by trying to pick winners.

Self evidently specially designated Treasury officials will draw some monies from Consolidated Revenue to place bets at selected Horse Racing and Dogs meetings - including the Melbourne Cup.

Monies would be limited to $2.3 million in small bills and 3 hours over normal lunch will be appointed per diem.

In order to improve the performance of Treasury Officials (Senior Punters Grades 8A) the full facilities of the Bureau of Statistics will be assigned.

Also supercomputers from the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) should be made available to generate appopriate sure bet algorithms. Brute force attacks will be limited to State TABs and bank accounts of Racing Identities and Ministers.

Only 15% Commissions will recompense winning Punters Grade 8A.

I understand that a Cabinet Directive has been issued accordingly.

The problem is that you, and indeed the government, view things like the NBN and the CEFC as horses, whereas they're actually parts of the racecourse.

If you invest $100 on 100 bets and win 22% of the time at an average price of $4.40 you will win $96.80 for an overall loss of $3.20.
I dont know where you get 19% from?
You obviously dont understand how horseracing works. I doubt you have much of a handle on the economy either.

A complete failure of an attempt to use current events to push more right wing "small government" dogma.

another article promoting communist anti-business dogma. Our governments were successfully picking winners before 1972.

Aidan & mikk, the sentiments in the article were all Paul Keating ever talked about in his efforts to close down every industry other than quarrying, tourism & farming.
