The Bush Commitments acknowledged the risks involved in Israel unilaterally disengaging from Gaza and evacuating the 8000 Jews who had established 21 settlements there.

While Israel sees advantage in conservative Republican US Presidents (eg. Bush Jnr) Israel is sometimes forced to work with US Presidents who are not.

In that sense Netanyahu, and conservative diaspora-agents for Israel, need to reconcile themselves to political change in the real world. That includes the US under Democrat Obama having the right to alter agreements and policies over time.

Diaspora-agents for Israel can be reassured that after two term Democrat stints US politics tends to swing to two terms of Republican rule. The knuckle dragging IQ level of US voters being the cause.

The Obama administration has demonstrated, repeatedly, the dangers of 'sovereign risk' in dealings with a Democrat led America. Or, is this an injustice to the Democrats as opposed to sheeting the blame to Obama personally? I am quite sure a Republican America would not agree to a deal that allows Iran to develop a nuclear arsenal.
Rhrusty. Whilst 'history may be uninspiring, I am not sure these 'assurances' and the 'deal' between Bushand Sharon could actually be described as 'history', the ink on the paper is not quite dry yet.
