No yellow cake for India : Comments

By Dave Sweeney, published 18/5/2015

Even if strict safeguards were in place, uranium sales to India would create intractable problems through uranium exports freeing up India's domestic reserves for weapons production.

India is a rare beast, a real Democracy and as such sell 'em as much as they like. Real Democracies need to hang together ore will will surely hang apart.
Plus they are a great bulwark against the Islamic juggernaut trying to roll over Civilization.

'morning Dave,

Sometimes when your head is buried so deep in rectal nuclear activism, it is hard to pull it out long enough to to grasp reality.

It may have just escaped your attention but this year Canada agreed to uranium sales to India worth $350 m, with shipment of 15,000 metric tonnes this year alone.

India has 21 nuclear power plants already with six more in build. They plan to generate 25% nuclear power by 2050.

Now read your own article and see if makes one iota of sense?

India has nuclear weapons, it has other sources of uranium, there are no sensible grounds for Australia not supplying it.

I wonder how many opposing this transaction - which will facilitate provision of much-needed reliable base-load power without greenhouse gas emissions, and help millions to come out of poverty - are also anti-emissions activists? 97%? And perhaps also support aid for the poor? Except, of course, for reliable base-load power which is the most effective antidote to poverty?

This article argues strongly for Australia to 'take control' of the complete nuclear cycle it can formulate. Dig it up, process it into fuel rods, lease the rods to appropriate democracies, (such as India), return the used rods for storage and reprocessing. Helps a good neighbour, relieves poverty and makes a comfortable profit (for all)

Why this article should quibble over this transaction, whilst the UN Security Council allows Iran to acquire nuclear weapons (not if but when), and watches Saudi Arabia acquire weapons from Pakistanand, says nothing about our exports to Russia, beggars belief.

Refer to McCackie above for a bit of sense. Spindoc, don't hold back there lad, tell him exactly what you really think :)). I fully agree.

The Indian Government needs nuclear power to fuel its ambitious plans to give its people a decent standard of living. Prime Minister Modi would prefer to buy from Australia, but if Australia doesn't sell he will get it elsewhere. India seeks to be a sincere friend of Australia in a region where our true friends are few and far between. People like Dave Sweeney should just get out of the way.
