Australia's call for volunteers to host a radioactive waste facility : Comments

By Anica Niepraschk, published 4/5/2015

Over the coming weeks and months we will find out whether the Federal Government's new approach to finding a radioactive waste storage and disposal site will be more successful than past efforts.

Quite problem isn't it !
It is really part of the transition to a new energy regime.
Unless there is an unexpected breakthrough in the generation of electricity
or liquid fuel in a far more efficient process the storage of nuclear
waste will have to be solved very soon indeed.

There are many reports of how much cheaper solar will be than burning coal.
The ERoEI of coal is falling and will in the future be uneconomic to mine.
However wind and solar ERoEI is too low with backup to be useable.
Hopefully there will be a ten times increase in output for the same
input for alternatives, but if there isn't, and how long do we wait
before we give up and adopt a nuclear program ?

There is the risk that it is now too late to start a nuclear project
to build a fleet of nuclear power stations.

It comes out of the ground! So why can't it go back in?

We Aussies are an inventive lot, and we have invented a thing called rockcrate. This is a blend of waste and silica++, that is virtually bullet proof and impervious to water, be it alkaline, acid or salt!

Besides, as the driest inhabited continent, we have areas where rain hardly ever falls and where there are mountains that could hold millions of tons of the stuff; and safely buried deep within, for thousands of years!

And produce less rads than the granite we and others build their homes out of, or are routinely exposed to during air travel!

And earn annual billions for the host state!

Perhaps S.A has some suitable country, that currently serves no other viable purpose!?

And as directed and informed by the facts, rather than a mountain of green supplied misinformation, or no longer valid or current info!?

Stop and smell the Co2; it is carbon that is threatening our very existence, not the peaceful use of nuclear fuel!

And if you're worried about terrorists getting hold of some to use in dirty bombs, then why not mix it as permanent rockcrate and bury it deep inside a far less accessible mountain range, outback of the outback inhospitable, heat, snake and dingo infested, dryer and hotter than hell, Australian mountain range!?

One would only need a few very well camouflaged and well supplied, snake and dingo proof boam homes, populated by round the clock regularly relieved teams of two, climate seasoned snipers, with a licence to shoot first and ask questions later? To protect a relatively small very well signposted and double security fenced, (assisted by 360 radar, thermal imaging, night sights and perhaps remote control, live round, 50 cal, Armour piecing shooting range; turn back folks) site of just a few hectares, from any uninvited guests!

why not Nauru? It wouldn't be in our backyard, and they probably wouldn't mind, now that all the bird guano has gone, there's all that vacant space left to be filled up.

If they go down that road, they could get Nauru House and Air Nauru back from the repo folks and go back to living the high life.

But then, they'd probably ask to have all those boat people repatriated, preferably to Australia.

Nah, just another bad idea.

Fukushima is being covered up on a large scale.PM Abe will give any journo 10 yrs jail for printing unauthorised material on Fukushima. It is now thought it will take 200 yrs before they have the technology to clean it up.

Robots fail at this level of radiation. If you cannot control nuclear radiation, wait until the technology is available than can.

Don't know where you get your information about cover ups, Arjay, but according to a Japanese friend of mine who lives on Tokyo, it's all a bit ho hum to them now. The Western press gets hold of a few remarks from a minority, and publishes it as unquestionable truth.

Japan and Japanese are more like us than they are with Asians, and they have the same moaners and groaners we have. Most know that, for them, it's nuclear power or freeze in the dark.

Yes Bazz, this will possibly go down as a lost opportunity as chances are we will never have the resources to fund such a transition to nuclear power. Our only hope will be foreign investment and even that is heavily debated at present.

Super was another lost opportunity in my view.

You can't waste as much as we have, during boom times I might add, and expect to pull a finiancial rabbit out of your hat.
