Here's the type of new Sri Lankan Government activity that may draw a coup reaction. "Sri Lanka has replaced the ex-military governor of the country’s Tamil-majority north with a civilian." http://thediplomat.com/2015/01/sri-lanka-sacks-military-governor-in-tamil-majority-north/

Looks like a coup may still be possible. Rajapaksa's clan must have put away a vast Swiss bank account warchest - perhaps to pay off Colonels and Generals to launch a coup.
My website, Submarine Matters, supports Graham's points about Chinese submarine visits to Columbo, Sri Lanka. In early September 2014 a conventional Chinese submarine visited http://gentleseas.blogspot.com.au/2014/10/first-chinese-submarine-visit-to-indian.html . Then in November 2014 Beijing upped the ante with a nuclear propelled sub visit http://gentleseas.blogspot.com.au/2014/10/first-chinese-submarine-visit-to-indian.html .
For a relatively small island nation Sri Lanka does generate alot of interest. This is particularly in naval strategic terms as the Sri Lankan landform is the thin end of the wedge towards the center of the Indian Ocean.
