Expect LNP to survive swing : Comments

By Gary Johns, published 12/1/2015

The Queensland cabinet will look very much the same after the election, with the notable exception of its Premier Campbell Newman.

Yes, and because it's just to big a swing back to expect?
Perhaps next time, but particularly if the LNP is still as much or more on the nose.

And that includes the possibility of a (Newmanless) hung parliament and the parliament effectively controlled by a handful of disaffected independents until then, with the LNP nonetheless, wearing all the blame for outcomes.

And perhaps a less and less popular patently power hungry Jeff Sweeney, might struggle to hold his seat against the new PUP candidate?

A hung Parliament exactly what the LNP didn't want and arguably all they really deserve?

Perhaps one day, we will get a government that keeps its promises/undertakings.

Until then we'll just keep getting the emasculated one we deserve!

"Should the LNP lose, Queensland and Australia should abandon all hope of rational politics and economic reform."

What a sobering thought!

The above quote by Raycom and this one: "Palmer, Katter, Greens and sundry others will not feature at the state election" demonstrate what a pathetically superficial analysis this is by Mr Johns.

Apropos the Raycom quote does Mr Johns have any idea what an incompetent Treasurer Hockey is proving to be? What is the basis for any assertion that the LNP is economically competent? I know that they love to trade on that idea, but the truth is that this country has not had a Treasurer with vision and a grasp of reality since Keating. When one gets to State level one is really scraping the barrel.

As to the second quote, it is disturbing on a number of levels. If r Johns actually bothered to add up the share of the primary vote likely to be obtained by parties other than Labor and the LNP he would see that it represents at least 20% of the voting population. They may win few if any seats, given the stupidities of our electoral system, but they all have a vote, and they will cast preferences that will determine the outcome in a solid number of seats.

The Redcliffe and Stafford by-elections demonstrated just how on the nose this arrogant, anti-democratic and insufferable LNP government has been over the past three years with the electorate. Notwithstanding the desperate efforts of the Tory press, one would not be in the least surprised to see this as a one term government.

It may not be as good as first past the post, but thank god for our electoral system.

If we had a crazy system like Tasmania, the James O'Neills & the rest of the fairies from the bottom of the garden could be infesting the parliaments all over the country.

It certainly took Tasmania long enough to get back to some sensible form of government, once the pixie dust spread.
