Challenging the orthodoxy : Comments

By Kellie Tranter, published 30/10/2014

We all have an obligation, both to ourselves and to society, to speak out and to act when we see unfairness, injustice and the orchestrated manipulation of true discussion of issues that affect us all.

Yes, we do. And thank you Kellie Tranter for posting this article.

Of course Noam Chomsky has speaking and writing about this phenomenon for 50 years now, summed up in the title of one of his early books Manufacturing Consent.
The CIS is of course very much a part of the world-wide propaganda machine involved in manufacturing this "consent" - even though the people who work there like to pretend otherwise.

I find it hard to disagree with any part of the article.
We should and must remain free to express any heartfelt opinion, forever without timidity; however wrong headed or irrelevant it may be.
We must remain free to express ourselves, without fear or favor, even when opposed by the majority, or herd mentality.
Just as long as we allow (confer on) all others the same right!
All human progress has almost always been accompanied by disagreement and debate, some of it intensely personal or hostile.
Certainly groups like Isil seem to not only challenge orthodoxy, but completely ignore any non conforming opinion or fact?
Without doubt the conformation bias is alive and well, as seen in some of your former (minority view/dissenting) posts Kellie!

The trouble is that Kellie is too one-eyed to see that the "progressive" left is just as much inclined to silence deviations from its own prevailing orthodoxy as the reactionary right.

For example, she cites “litigation against Professor Jake Lynch for his refusal to sponsor an application for a fellowship in Australia by an Israeli academic because of Lynch's support of the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions” as an attack on freedom of thought and action - apparently oblivious to the irony that Jake Lynch and the BDS movement are trying to silence Israelis in the name of ideology.

You know I can't figure it out.

Is this Kellie's application for a job in academia. She sure toes the line on the ideology, or is she after one of those sweet overpaid jobs in the ABC's left promotion machine.

What out Kerry O'Brien & company, I think it's one of your job she's after.
