More importantly, in terms of top 50 and 100 world performers since 2000, the decline in walking and field events appears less dramatic than evident by running.

And the purpose of this article? I suspect the answer can be summed up as rent seeking.

Let the athletes compete if they want, but not with my money.

I can't recall ever asking some ego laden narcissistic to push themsleves to their physical limit on my behalf nor do I have any recollection whatsoever offering my tax dollars for them to do so.
If anyone desires to mount a winners podium then do it with your own resources. I'd rather see my contribution go towards some needy & deserving citizens, not some egoist.
