Uthman Badar is entitled to be a bigot : Comments

By Laurence Maher, published 16/7/2014

Why not, without further ado, call another media conference to announce that he has published on theHizb ut-Tahrir Australia web site the talk which, when the squeals went up, FODI decided was just too outrageous a challenge to mainstream thought.

Honour killing is a gutless crime, performed by mongrels.

Here's a report from May this year:

A 25-year-old...woman has been stoned to death by her family outside the ...High Court in a so-called 'honour killing'...police said.

[She] was waiting for the court to open when a group of around dozen men began attacking her with bricks, said [a senior police officer].

Her father, two brothers and former fiance were among the attackers, he said.

[She] suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead in hospital.

All the suspects except her father escaped arrest. He admitted killing his daughter and explained it was a matter of honour.

A nice article, clearly taking through the issues. Thanks.
That FODI managed to turn the odious Badar into a victim of repression of free speech show how shallow and hypocritical it is.

plantagenet,
I imagine if an honour killing were to happen in Australia & someone turned around & put one of the attackers out of his misery than the person who did that would be persued by the Police & get locked up for murder. So, where is our system more humane than that of those brainwashed hillbillies ?
Who are the bigots ?

Freedom of political speech is a core value of western civilisation. Although not necessarily part of the Constitutions of western countries, it has for decades been considered a done deal. Western people are called "free countries" because the inhabitants take it for granted that they have the freedom to talk freely about any social issue that affects them.

This fundamental western right (you can shove "Human Rights) is now under attack by ideological reactionaries who see freedom of speech as an impediment to creating the perfect multicultural society which they envision. They are being aided by vote buying politicians, who see the benefits of appealing to ethnic and religious minorities as a way of scraping into power. These ethnic and religious minorities, after clamouring to gain entrance into a free society, wish to turn back the clock on free speech, as a way of protecting themselves, their culture, and their collective behaviour, from valid criticism.

However offensive we as western people find Uthman Badar's belief's, he as a member of our society must be allowed to express them and explain his rationale. Because if we ban any speech about social issues on the basis of it being "offensive" to the public, most of us would still live in ignorance about Evolution. Evolution was once "offensive" to the majority of the population who considered themselves Christian. As late as the 1930's, public speakers in Sydney were being arrested for "blasphemy", that is, for giving speeches denying the existence of God. In the USA, despite the First Amendment, in 1925, a schoolteacher (John Scopes) was prosecuted for teaching evolution at school in Dayton, Tennessee.

It is interesting to compare the Uthmam Badar case with that of John Scopes. Scopes represented an educated person arguing observable reality against revealed truth. Uthman is a person who believes that revealed truth takes precedence over a the values, attitudes and behaviours of a society based upon observable secular reality. We can not criticise as stupid those who shouted down Scopes, if we act the same way towards Uthman

Great post Lego –another interesting comparison would be this case:

"OPERA Australia has cancelled their contract with Tamar Iveri after public backlash at homophobic comments made by the singer. Ms Iveri was slated to play Desdemona in an upcoming production of Otello until a public Facebook post she made to the Georgian President damning homosexuals surfaced."

LEGO - good post.

I support Badar's right to free speech for the same reason I support Andrew Bolt's: it's a core principle of ("small-l") liberalism. Democracy has shown itself to be robust enought to withstand attack even from those who seek to use its own values against it. I disagree with both Bolt and Badar, but both should be free to speak.
