What on earth has it to do with governments what people put into their mouths & suck. If they were really serious about stopping people damaging themselves this way, homosexuality would still be illegal, & a lot less people would have got aids.

We get Jayb with his bit of propaganda about the cost of health care for smokers. Come off the grass mate, smokers have paid in tobacco taxes for most of the healthcare bill, & most definitely a lot more than they consume. Hell if the stories of health problems are true, they even drop off the edge much younger, saving the government a fortune in pensions & age care as well.

One of the worst things about modern society is the stupidity of governments buying bleeding hearts & control freaks votes, with restrictions on things like smoking. If we could get these busybodies doing something useful, rather than sticking their noses in where they are not wanted, the world would be a better place. Hell they could even get a real job perhaps.

Incidentally, I don't smoke, except out of the ears when I'm confronted by these control freaks.

I find it irritating when someone reads something into what I write and then tries to refute it while ignoring the actual point I was trying to make.

I was not trying to imply that only the Coalition had applied restrictions on tobacco, but that 11 years and numerous restrictions (far more than you listed) in this time considerably reduced the smoking rates, and the rate of drop in smoking has not changed notably since. The implication is that this packaging policy has not made a measurable effect other than annoying the manufacturers.

The restrictions brought in by Keating and Howard were done after serious research unlike the thought bubble packaging laws.
