By David Robertson, published 20/3/2014

Many of the large systemic changes to education are about meeting longer term goals and as a result are not particularly well suited to the electoral cycles of government.

Government cycles or P&c committees can lack vision..my sons school on the Gold Coast, Varsity College, is a public school and yet is a clear leader worldwide with a one to one laptop program where all students from year 6 -12 have a laptop in class.

There is no book library in use but a VR centre which upsets some P&C members but the leadership team is working at the cutting edge with Microsoft to prepare them for the future.

Boomer,
Which future are they preparing them for ? The one with a shortage of food & fuel & a lack of communication or the more ambitious one of total control via the internet provided it keeps working ?
Will microsoft be able to by-pass the insanity of religion to ensure a better future ? What will people do in the event of communication being cut if they are unable to think ? I wonder if a laptop can dig soil & plant crops or build shelter or cook meals etc ?
I think this kind future-proofing is exactly what we don't need. We need people who can think rather than just follow to scripts. Of course we need to continue on developing technology but it must be parallel to common & practical sense. We need practical education just as much as any other. We have neglected practical education for several decades now & the cracks are getting wider, just waiting till they get too wide has already proven to be a major factor in our failing as a society.
