In the half-light of insider politics : Comments

By John Warhurst, published 5/3/2014

The world of insiders is permeable. Individual career paths, Labor and Coalition, often involve moving between work as staffers, commercial lobbyists, corporate lobbyists and pressure group lobbyists.

There ought to be a law that prevents former pollies and staffers from becoming lobbyists, for at least a decade out from politics.
This would stop various entities from hiring them as consultants, and paying them fat or patently obscene salaries, to prosper very narrow vest interest or counterproductive outcomes.
This law would act to prevent people choosing to become career pollies, but rather, get a real job and world experience prior to entering politics?
Meaning, there would be an alternative career pathway to return to after politics! And wouldn't that clean up politics, and or mitigate against, what is sometimes seen as almost compelled corruption? Jobs for the boys, cronyism and it's handmaiden, nepotism?

Footnote: This proposed new law, ought apply equally to also prevent former lobbyists becoming staffers, being selected or elected, for the same ten year time period?
We really do need to clean out narrow vested interests from all our parliaments, the possible corruption it may engender and return to true representation; and by the people for the people democracy!
