Will Russia deploy military forces to Ukraine? : Comments

By Ali Omidi, published 28/2/2014

One can assume Russia has not been idle and has been working out an effective strategy in order to reduce the geopolitical costs of what is going on in this East European country for Moscow.

London to a brick it will, and it really would be history simply repeating itself?
However, in the past the nations that were invaded simply rolled over and begged for a tummy rub. The Ukraine is a very different kettle of fish, with a few former Soviet ICBM silos and a warm port to bargain with.
Even so, it could win back the autonomous Crimea, which was part of Russia a little over a century ago, and where most of the population still speak Russian.
However, no matter which country the Crimea declares military allegiance to, they will still want and likely fight, to keep their hard won autonomy.
I mean, who can trust a patently power hungry, Sabre rattling Putin!?
I believe the Ukraine could win/swing back back popular eastern support, simply by Guaranteeing that self governing autonomy and alternative, endlessly sustainable and entirely independent energy supplies!

@Halduel. Thanks for the link. It provided some useful information. More than can be said of this simplistic article that manages to ignore most of the crucial questions. Paul Craig Roberts has a typically blunt column on his website that repays a visit.

The US/NATO have been actively undermining the Ukraine government for years, as Victoria Nuland's leaked audiotape reveals, for a number of years. That audio tells us too much about how the US conducts its foreign policy which is why it rapidly disappeared down the msm memory hole. The US promoted "colour revolution" didn't achieve the desired result, so they are trying again.

This time they backed the so-called "moderates", conveniently overlooking that in doing so they were attempting to overthrow a legitimately elected government. To the surprise of none actually familiar with Ukrainian history, that faction was easily replaced in short order by far right elements. "Neo-Nazi" is a misnomer. They are Nazis, pure and simple. Their roots derive from the Ukraine sourced Waffen SS divisions that fought on Hitler's side against the Soviet Union in WW2. The rhetoric (and tactics) of their leadership is straight out of the Hitler playbook.

The US/NATO of course had wider ambitions than simply the replacement of a pro-Russia government. Their aim is to further the encirclement of Russia with more missile bases, thus increasing the insane belief of some elements of the US military who believe that they can succeed in a nuclear first strike against the Russians.

A secondary goal was the closure of the major Russian naval base at Sevastopol in the Crimea.

As typically happens, events spiralled out of control very rapidly. The Ukraine has now entered a very dangerous phase, with a civil war increasingly likely, as is a military intervention, at least in the East and South, by the Russians. US warnings against such an intervention is yet another indication of the double standards that govern Western "diplomacy".

This morning's Australian predictably uses the events as an opportunity for more Putin bashing, ignoring the role of the US in fomenting trouble, and ignoring the history of the region. The Russians have no such illusions or memory hole.

It is an incredibly dangerous situation. The hubris, greed and stupidity of the West in pursuit of its geo-political goals could well escalate to a full blown war.

And Security Council member Australia's response? A stunning silence from our erstwhile Foreign Minister whom, one suspects, would have trouble locating Ukraine on a map.
