Summer reading: the image and the reality to be : Comments

By Stephen Keim, published 20/1/2014

2013 was a good year for reading. My penchant is for non-fiction but the blokes of the Blokes’ Book Club kept me in the novels game.

Lotsa name dropping. The author is not at fault for being a lawyer.

I had a look at the introduction of Michelle Alexander’s "The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colour-blindness", and not unexpectedly, it was a book which excused rampant black crime and blamed the very high crime rates of blacks on white people. Endless references to racism and discrimination. No wonder it was a best seller among the trendy whites who live as far away from black areas as they can get, while at the same time displaying their liberal credentials as the protectors of minorities.

Fans of John Grisham will be pleased to know that he has once again returned to the courtroom genre with his new book Sycamore Row. The story is about an incident which occurs in the fictional little town of Clanton, Mississippi, three years after the Cal Lee Hayley verdict (which was the story in Grisham's highly acclaimed " Time to Kill".) The book has all of the characters from his previous book, Jake the lawyer and his wife, Carla, Ozzie the black sheriff, Lucian, the disbarred lawyer and his mistress, Sallie, and Harry Rex Vonner, the towns hated divorce lawyer.

The "villains" are of course, a bunch of overpaid big city lawyers who come to Clanton to contest a will and who then battle the hayseed lawyers in court. Great story, funny metaphors, wonderful characters.
