You are currently experiencing the kitchen-table version of what many on this forum have been patiently trying to get you to understand for a number of years.

Which is, that your "belief system" does not stand up to any kind of scrutiny. Do you have children, by any chance? More relevantly, were you fortunate enough to have parents?

Because "family arguments" are fundamental to the growing-up process. Without the ritual - kids challenge ideas, and grown-ups defend them on the basis that they are older and wiser. The kids of course don't accept this, and challenge again, on the grounds that a) the world has changed, dad, and b) older might just mean being a stick-in-the-mud, not de facto evidence of wisdom.

And so it goes on. Both sides learn something, about themselves, their ideas, their prejudices, their influences. They might continue to disagree, of course, that is perfectly ok. But to bypass this right of passage on any topic, large or small, is an abdication of parental responsibility. These articles appear to seek the impression of aged wisdom distilled from the weariness of a battle hardened pilgrim, or something like that. I don't know. It's too aloof for me.

But I don't see any depth in this. It's too easily dismissed, even in a few sentences, in the first comment by GlenC. I can almost sympathise with the comments of an atheist like Jon J, which are at least more easily comprehensible by comparison.

Theology should be understandable. Primary school children happily read the gospels unaided, and get a lot out of them.

Similar to Doug, this was the phrase that jumped out at me: "good musical and artistic resources as well a good preaching." This sounds to me a lot like Hillsong Church, a growing and vibrant church in Sydney. But I know Peter's stomach would churn at the thought of giving Hillsong too much credit.

Peter credits the Christian West as being a great font of what's best and most appreciated in art. Yet art alone is not enough. Faith must be reasonable.

Why can't he appreciate what the Christian West gave us in the sciences? As great men of faith, men of great science and discovery, such as Kepler, in the unveiling of mysteries, said he was 'thinking God's thoughts after him'.

Faith is supposed to be reasonable. The great apostle Paul spent much of his time and effort in debate. 

God himself would not bother communicating to us so lucidly through the Scriptures if he wasn't interested in being known by and easily relating to ordinary, thinking people.

We clearly have a vastly different understanding of the word "lucid". Only the most dedicated theologist could possibly iron out its mass of internal contradictions, which tend to leave "ordinary, thinking people" scratching their heads at the confusion of antiquated social customs, masquerading as a message to humankind from a supreme being.

But then again, maybe it's just me.

Peter Sellick has demonstrated matters of faith are, at the least, flexible...

So, even though there is no scriptural basis of which I am aware for the statement, I chose to nod in agreement with Dan S de Merengue's "Faith is supposed to be reasonable" and regard the last sentence as ironic.

Most of the Bible is very lucid. It helps if you pick up a good modern translation. Though I'll admit that there are some loose threads (often where the popular media want to focus), and some passages where it would help to inquire into the historical or cultural background. But this is to be expected when reading a collection of writings of such antiquity. And there is plenty of scope for mystery and enigma.

But the Bible speaks plainly, even to modern readers. It's essential themes are evident. It isn't the world's most read, most translated and most analysed book for no reason; year in, year out.

The book of Revelation is a prophetic vision. It's a recognisable genre for that period (even though unusual sounding to us today) and its meaning would have been perfectly clear and obvious to the original recipients of the letter in the 1st Century AD.

The general idea of what it's about is spelled out in the first few sentences:

'This is a a revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants the events that must soon take place. He sent an angel to present this revelation to his servant John, who faithfully reported everything he saw. This is his report of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ.
God blesses the one who reads the words of this prophecy to the church, and he blesses all who listen to its message and obey what it says, for the time is near.'

The Bible seems to speak to a lot of people. Obviously, it carries more significance for believers, which I understand you not to be.

The prophesy in these particular passages speak more to the soul and the emotions, rather than the rational mind. In such a manner, the book of Revelation could be comparable to modern day song lyrics. That was the intent of the letter, to stir the emotions. Other books take on other purposes.

What I said earlier was that there are some passages where it would help to inquire into the historical or cultural background. Doing this would throw light on the deeper meaning of the symbolism within the book of Revelation.
