By David Robertson, published 22/10/2013Failure to act swiftly is likely to see the new funding model abandoned in terms of any support from the schooling sectors with a resultant further period of funding uncertainty.

How long are we going to continue to disadvantage, on the grounds of disadvantage!
We started winning our wars when those who came from privilege were no longer automatically made officers, or given an automatic commission. One of our best wartime Generals was a banana farmer, the other, a steam engineer! Pakistan and India, improved out of sight, when their cricket players, were finally selected from a pool of the best, rather than the most privileged. And we who already punch well above our weight, in the field of science and medicine, will perform far better, when our best and brightest get the Guernsey, rather than the most privileged. We cannot continue to justify poverty post codes, given they are invariably man-made, and the product of misappropriated welfare? Which has for some time, being handed out to the rich, as well as the poor. Ideally, we would do far better as a nation, with a far better future, if we but saved our charity for the needy and stopped giving it to the greedy! Unfortunately, we are now in the hands of those who invented middle class welfare? If struggling parents want a better deal for their kids, they need to understand that any disadvantage, is the principle product of welfare misappropriation? Somehow justified with the usual weasel words, which seeks to portray current funding arrangements, as some sort of equal treatment! Rhrosty. Posted by Rhrosty, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 6:34:43 PM

‘David Robertson’s suggestions (“A few ways Pyne can fix up the Gonksi mess”, 18/10) fix nothing
‘The Gonski report’s keeping the Howard government’s socio-economic status model in place is its worst feature. It is akin to varying Medicare rebates according to the wealth of the patients’ neighbours. Absorbing the loadings, such as that for English as a second language, into the SES level, would remove the one really good feature of the Gonski report; i.e., its recognition that different students need different amounts of money to be educated. The proposal to calculate the SES level of the neighbours of government school students illustrates the danger in the SES model; viz, that it will lead to means-tested fees in government schools.
‘The fix required to the Gonski model is to base public funding on the resources the school has, not the wealth of the students’ neighbours.’
