The argument could be made that those who sought to remove all tariffs and cease all other government assistance were defeated during that national debate.

I disagree that we "resolved” anything through national debate. The protectionists won political favours but they never won an argument. The recent announcement of car plant closures proves what opponents of protectionism have argued all along – in the long run, unless we’re willing to pour far more taxpayer dollars into the industry than the benefits it delivers, its closure is inevitable because the economics don’t stack up.
