If you read the history of the insurgency on the Malay and Thai southern border:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Thailand_insurgency you will see that the location is being held to ransom by a varied, faceless group of terrorists and criminals. The Thai Government are completely within their rights to defend this area. Many people have been targeted here, both Muslims and Buddhists .. monks have been murdered, schools burnt to the ground, Thai police have been killed fighting associated drug-related crime. There have been accusations that many of the insurgents have been trained by groups such as al-Qaeda and Jemaah Islamiyah which (to me) seems possible considering their well documented agenda of causing chaos throughout the world. Any suggestion that Thailand should bow to these terrorists and consider re-evaluating their southern border is completely illogical and tantamount to acquiescence to terrorist threats and demands. The most pragmatic response would be, I believe, a redrawing of their common border?
That then included the currently problematic southern Thailand Islamic state, as part of Malaysia, which is currently predominantly Muslim.
And therefore, far less likely, to further marginalize or under-privilege, a current Muslim minority?
