'Yeah-na', you've missed one vital ingredient; The sanitation of public comment from sports persons.
'The boys hung in there', 'taking one game at a time', 'Thanks to the sponsors', 'Bowled in the right areas', and 'the leadership group'. Who wants to hear another sports person saying 'I didn't execute my skills as well as I would have liked'? Or the clincher, that it has all been a 'incredible roller-coaster journey'. Seriously man, the people either don't want the sportsperson to open their mouth at all, or they want them to actually say something, anything not on the PR hymn sheet, and I'm sick of them being censored for 'bringing the game into disrepute' by having an actual opinion on something. The inevitable consequence of this sterile PR brand management is the hunger from the public for any sportsperson who appears to actually be a real person, has genuine rather than scripted passion, has flaws, has actual unscripted fun, fuccks rather than makes love, and can have the balls to be their own person. In short, someone with the skill to be that good at their sport that the powers that be have to hesitate before slapping them on the wrist for daring to have an opinion. 'Role models' WTF! I'd rather share a drink with Warnie than Pat Rafter. Warnie is a hasbeen, but he IS the greatest leg spinner of all time. But much more than that he has an actual opinion on his port and is not afraid to express it. He's a genius, he's a twat, but he's real! And don't try and tell me the powers that be weren't cheering him on every step of the way promoting that boring as batsh1t hit and giggle, trying to convince the public that someone actually cares who wins. Just because he overstepped some imaginary line why should he get any more than a slap on the wrist. He single-handedly doubled the audience and the revenue. If you want to blame anyone, blame 'Cricket Australia', or as more sane and rational people call them, 'The Australian Cricket Board'. Posted by Houellebecq, Wednesday, 16 January 2013 12:19:22 PM

Houellie,
Regarding Warnie being the greatest leg-spinner of all time. You obviously didn't see me bowl out the entire mechanics team at the service station in 1981....(work was slow that day:) All those blokes didn't think a girl could bowl - and left themselves right open for a bit of outside the leg stump-(rubbish bin) spin - took 'em out every time. It was a joy to behold. Posted by Poirot, Wednesday, 16 January 2013 12:51:10 PM

Unfortunately most sports stars never seem to understand what the public may be thinking of them, take Lleyton Hewitt for instance, the theatricals put on by him earlier in his tennis career, now sticks with him in his now quieter tennis domain, unfortunately most people remember when their only thought was "I wish he would grow up". When I see the Swiss advert with Lleyton featured in it, I think to myself " I will never buy their products" Pat Rafter on the other hand would have no problem in this area at all, humility is nice to see.
Bernard Tomic I feel will be a great tennis player, at least he does not have the theatrics of Lleyton, but he must learn to be humble which he is not at the moment, the I am great attitude is wrong and most people I know want him to lose, which is unfortunate, as they should be barracking for him and not the opponent. Shane Warne the least said the better, time journalists forgot him and spent more time on far more interesting reporting. Posted by Ojnab, Wednesday, 16 January 2013 2:42:51 PM

Is it wrong to feel aroused by that Poirot. Cricket appreciating women are rarer than rare.
Was it like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1ChUfhFbcc Or maybe more like this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56dLkOHRim8 Surely you didn't turn it this much? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tI2PLQ5g6s I love the look of dejection on chanders there Posted by Houellebecq, Thursday, 17 January 2013 12:02:06 PM

I know it's not cricket, but not all the buffoons belong to Australian sport...

Warne is an excellent example of a brat being allowed in a game suited for gentlemen (and ladies). He should never have been offered a place in the national team and, having demonstrated how destructive he tended to be, should have any place that was offered, withdrawn.
That was a couple of decades ago.
In the meantime, we have seen spectacularly immature egos rise within the Aussie swimming team, again witnessed the lack of maturity and even of basic honesty in one or two celebrated cases. Australian Olympic swimming results demonstrate that the size of the ego does not determine who wins in the pool.
I have not mentioned names, because the sooner the unsporting sportspersons and the parents, managers, publicists and trainers who fashioned them are forgotten, the better.
I could mention the football codes and more, but repetition is not warranted. These infants should be shown the door, for the good of their teams and of our games.
