Bellowing boorish broadcasters : Comments

By Ian Nance, published 28/8/2012

Yelling is not the best way to convey excitement; it is more a sign of losing control, of indicating alarm or warning, of showing anger.

I quite agree with these comments . Perhaps this practice commenced at the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games , when the saintly commentator, Norman May , repeatedly shouted " Gold , Gold , Gold " whenever an Australian competitor won . However , he was almost as loud when an Australian came seventh .

Another silly practice is when the commentator screams " [ name of winner ] you are a true legend ".

...One of the beauties of television is simply that…Vision! I watch football matches on television with the TV mostly muted. This method allows the viewer to be their own commentator.

...You neglected to mention Ian, the PA system which broadcasts local Sunday football matches in a shrill, audible to the whole town…No mute button for that instance unfortunately.

...We reserve our own opinions on this issue of course, but a question could be asked; is there a connection between this increasingly annoying phenomena and the call of an auctioneer? Maybe commentators are “moonlighting” from their “day-job”!

Ian you failed to mention the source of this shouting match.

It was our ABC.

Lacking all ability, todays ABC has this method of defining what you are watching.

Lots of loud shouting indicates you are watching a drama.
Even louder, & longer shouting, great drama.

If this self proclaimed icon of entertainment can use this system, why not the humble sports commentator?
