A COAG to remember indeed; given the predicted reluctance of the richer states to embrace the disability scheme until after the next election, where any kudos can be directed at the coalition.
Have we gone so low as a society, that our disabled can be used as a political football for base political purpose?
Shame Australia, shame COAG, shame Barnet, shame Newman, shame Abbott, for making this shameful sorry impasse possible, with his litany of; NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Such a good article, discussing our head-in-the-sand attitude towards disability and our "willful blindness" towards our less fortunate fellow travelers. It is so true that if we are unaffected we just don't want to know. I wonder if Australia's stance on disability has something to do with the "bronzed Aussie" image we have of ourselves, the exultation of the sporting heroes and the tough bush characters. Disability doesn't fit well with this. Social change happens slowly around this issue - it is now forty years since Gough Whitlam first proposed the idea. But it's time to drag ourselves into the 21 st century and start to catch up to other first world countries. It's time to become the truly egalitarian society we all like to believe we already are. We must have commitment from state and federal, both sides of parliament and from our fellow Australians. We must have an NDIS no matter what it costs.
