Robust free speech should be encouraged in AFL : Comments

By Richard Allsop, published 13/7/2012

Now, as well as limiting fans' ability to express themselves quietly during breaks, there seems to be a push to limit what can be said loudly during play.

...This article is one of the most appropriate and relevant to the “masses” I have read on OLO in a while. I agree with all the sentiments expressed. If the author could address other issues in addition in future articles on the subject, such as:

The “corralling” of patrons into areas behind goal posts, in order to please TV producers.

The ridiculous entry cost to venues, which inhibit family group attendance to live games.

The rorting in car-park fees at these venues.

afl has become enslaved to ideology. If the crimes committed by a demons player (seems appropriate description) were done by a member of the general public that person would be demonised. He is not however a white male so will get all the 'support ' needed to get him back on the field. Well the victim of the crime? To bad!

can't remember the last time I watched an AFL game on telly let alone went to a game. It's a shadow Of the game I grew up with. Money spoils everything.

diver dan,
That could be a blessing in disguise. Instead of the whole family being brainless wonders watching footy there might actually be a chance of one or two in the family being attracted to something sensible instead.

I'm not an AFL follower but attempts to limit what supporters say appears to be typical of the controlling nature of the organisation. Their agenda appears to be openly hostile to the growth of other sports, especially other football codes. Small wonder Victoria, home of the AFL, is so poorly represented in all our national sporting teams.
