Enough to make a liberal weep : Comments

By David Leyonhjelm, published 20/4/2012

Queensland liberals may be in for disappointment. The NSW government, elected with a similarly huge mandate, is proving timid on the economic front and authoritarian on social issues.

...Another stimulating article by David Leyonhjelm: Politics continues to play-out as Federal funding for the duel-carriageway Pacific highway upgrade between Sydney and Brisbane, grinds into a gridlock of stalled roadworks, following the downscaling of Federal funding for the project from 80% to 50%; magically corresponding to the demise of the NSW Labor party at the last state election: A cynical pay-back from above, to punish the NSW population for its “mistake” in dismissing a morally bankrupt Government at the state level.

...Here is a warning to OLO readers to alert beleaguered drivers with the misfortune to use this stretch of horror road, to a frenzied escalation in police activity, resorting to old fashioned tactics of revenue collecting including “hidden” Police officers with radar guns, behind the butts of gum trees on the roadside. To the age old scam of undulating road-works speed signs through these networks of gravel roads, representing a highway to hell, through a completely unpredictable array of speed traps, with unavoidable consequences of double-demerit infringement to the unwary, by an over-zealous array of traffic Police in marked and unmarked cars.

...And welcome to Sydney, the "Chicago" of Australia. With guns blazing 24/7 between ethnic gangs (miss-classified as bikie gangs), who in reality advertise the total failure of Australia's version of Multiculturalism, overseen by an impotent N.S.W police force cloaked in the straight-jacket of political correctness, and overstaffed to distraction with female officers!

You're exaggerating. I drive up and down that highway once a month and there are actually fewer speed cameras than there used to be, and despite signs warning me otherwise, I have yet to see a policeman checking speed on the 80 kph and 60 kph stretches occasioned by roadworks.

The road's actually a lot better than it used to be, with some very nice stretches of four lane divided highway.

I agree with most of what Diver Dan says and can remember the almost obscene haste with which some liberal/coalition govts tore up rail lines, ostensibly to privatise most public transport or freight forwarding options. Then we wonder why we have to have almost constant road works and or gridlock.
I can remember the way Howard handed over the proceeds of the first mining boom as welfare for the rich handouts? When instead it ought to have gone to repairing or replacing or building new infrastructure. Now the current govt is obliged to keep borrowing up to a hundred million dollars a day, just so we can keep shelling out welfare for the rich, which is reportedly, at least as large as our genuine welfare for the needy outlays?
The problem with elections, is no matter who you elect, you always seem to wind up with empire building power hungry politicians, few of who have a reputation as forward looking rationalists, or providing genuinely logical far-sighted outcomes? Rhrosty.

Look, let's just call an election now in Queensland.

It's obvious the present Government just can't deliver ...

I mean, they have had weeks already! Why wait another three years?

I can only imagine what sort of screeching treatment Christine Kenneally and the ALP would have received from the media if she delivered -

Repeated chemical spill incidents, rampant gun crime in Sydney, cancelled school transport for disabled children and repeated policy backflips.

It sems that Gillard is branded a liar when she reneges on pre-election promises but the label somehow never gets applied to O'Farrell when he does the same.

There are only 2 rules that apply to every political party.
1. Get power.
2. Retain power.

Everything else is incidental and is done only in relation to rule 2 above.

There are interesting days ahead for Queensland too.

Has there ever been good outcomes, when you have dictatorial govt's.
With a lack of formidable opposition, the outcome may not be good.
Newman has a green streak, will be interesting to see how he uses that.
Budget delayed for 3 months, could be more.
Police commissioner hired, and fired. Probably sue the state for breach of contract. Everybody makes mistakes, politicians are exempt from mistakes.
QLD no longer the ?? state.
By years end we will get something to evaluate him on.
