The author must be joking. With such a lousy EROEI and diabolical environmental problems associated with crude from tar sands, it's not a viable option. Forget it and save the atmosphere.

Haven't you been one of those complaining about limits to resources, and how we're all just about to run out of oil?

Clearly we are not but someone has managed to find a pretext for declaring oil sands oil environmentally unsafe, so we really shouldn't use the stuff. Yhe fringe can then still pretend there is a resources crisis.

However, you will find that production will go ahead, as the yanks will still take this oil, and the levels of CO2 in the atmosphere will still increase at the same rate as before - at 2 PPM per year or less..

...Lack of motivation to shift lifestyles and technologies, which beg for the stuff (oil), will dictate its use and source into a dim future!

Daniel says "critics of the Obama administration are painting the Keystone XL oil pipeline planned from Alberta as a panacea to U.S. economic woes. Because of debates over the planned route through Nebraska, however, the White House has pushed the issue aside for now". Come on mate, call a spade a bl00dy shovel, Obama has "pushed the issue aside to buy an element of the ratbag green vote in his upcoming election.

As for "European leaders", I think it is fair to say their stupid policies of the last 20 years have seen them gain considerable speed down the slippery dip of failure, from their lofty pinnacle of success so recently abandoned. With their economy beyond saving, at least in the short term, they are reaching out for mates. Failure is so lonely, they would love to have Canada with them.

Even if they don't snag Canada, they will probably have the US for company. Obama has proven just so stupid, in his ideologically driven ratbaggery, that not to be outdone, he has jumped on that slippery dip, & is in hot pursuit of Europe. I wonder if there are enough yanks smart to dump him, before the crash at the bottom.

I wonder what we will do with our shale oil? We will harvest it at some time, as well as drilling for the runny stuff of shore from Gladstone. I suppose, once all our refineries have closed, we will export the raw product, in bulk, like we do with everything else.

Once you see them seriousdly exploiting those shale oil deposits around Gladstone then you'll know its time to start investing in electric cars. They've talked about it for decades, and had a pilot plant operating for a while. But the Canadian company involved for a time dumped that field in favour of the oil sands due to a change in technology.
