Sounds like Sneum's high degree of initiative, rather than being a mere foreigner totally controllable by British intelligence, also qualified him for stern measures by the British.
His career is also a sound argument against capital punishment. Mistaken or intentional campaigns of vengeance demanding death sentences may be political and only temporarily felt.
Fortunately Sneum survived but several years later in the US the Rosenberg's (one a mother of young children) were executed in a fit of temporary vengeance. Cold or Hot War, espionage and the law are related and confused aspects of politics.
