You'd think with all the money at their disposal, all the government resources and the entire on-side climate science world, they could have nailed this all by now.

If it's all so set in concrete, why does the IPCC need to use grad students, WWF and Greenpeace documents, where is the "science"?

Why am I surprised?

Any venture that i) taps into the most basic fears of the community, ii) is sufficiently abstruse for the general public to get their heads around, iii) is priceless tabloid-fodder and iv) is heavily funded with other people's money, is bound to attract charlatans, rent-seekers and the gullible in pretty much equal proportions.
