Garbage. The Australian horticulture industry is hiding behind protectionist barriers because it is fat, lazy and uncompetitive. The losers are Aussie consumers who don't buy enough fruit and vegetables because of the price.

If the locals lift their game, imports won't happen. They don't need mummy's skirts.

Quarantine is a tricky issue, and it is difficult to tell whether Australian regulations on the importation of apples was properly based on scientific risk assessment. The WTO seems to think not.

However the threat of exotic diseases is real, especially for such crops as bananas, so while I don't think that arbitrary trade barriers are a good idea, I seriously disagree with DavidL's position. He seems to think that plant diseases don't even exist, or if they did, they can't be imported with fresh produce, or even if they did, don't pose much of a threat. This is ridiculous, quarantine threats are real. Quarantine regulations need to be in place and enforced, but there will always be challenges to ensure that they aren't arbitrary.
