I’ve been to these islands, seen the poverty, experienced the hospitality and admired the tenacity. But the people are not naïve. They know about the risks and penalties of fishing in Australian waters and trafficking people because so many of their menfolk have not returned.
Indonesian authorities could stamp out this evil trade – it’s almost impossible to do anything secret in the Archipelago – but are presumably getting a cut to ignore what’s happening. So the men continue to take risks. great tragedies occur and Australian hostility grows.
Reform of the Indonesian public service is much needed and long overdue
