It ain't over until it's over : Comments

By John Spender, published 25/3/2011

Itís one thing to have good ideas about government; quite another thing to produce good workable well-budgeted outcomes.

John Spender is a Liberal veteran who knows what he's talking about. My only criticism of his piece is his recommendation that the incoming Govt fire ALL Labor appointees to boards, etc. It's just that some might be worth keeping. If the Liberal govt follows John's wider recommendation and appoints people who can actually fill the shoes they are being asked to, regardless of other considerations, it's inevitable that some appointees will have left-of-centre symathies. If they can do the job, so what? To appoint anyone but Labor sympathisers runs the risk of Liberal cronyism just like the Labor cronyism everyone justifiably complains about. I just hope enough competent Labor MPs survive to hold the new Govt effectively to account - a Govt with no effective Opposition is not a good thing.
