Let a stronger, better Christchurch rise from the rubble : Comments

By Edward Blakely, published 7/3/2011

The question for Christchurch, after the recent devastating earthquake, should not be whether the city will be rebuilt but how it will be rebuilt safely.

Agree entirely. It is too easy to fall back on sentiment in this sort of situation. Christchurch needs a new focus as a modern, forward looking city with a real difference. To rebuild in a partial copy of its former self would be to miss a huge opportunity. To raze the former CBD and use the rubble to create a somewhat elevated central park for the city would be a great start. Ring the Park with a walking avenue and place the CBD in a ring zone around the walking precinct. Local government offices should be placed in the ring along with other important public offices. Link in the Art Gallery and a memorial to the Cathedral in the style of Berlin and Coventry. Allow for restaurants and light commercial in the park ring buildings with low rise residential within viewing distance of the park. Public transport could radiate out from this city hub. Make the new city something to be proud of - not a missed opportunity!
