By Abolghasem Bayyenat, published 7/1/2011

Iranian public opinion is solidly behind Iran becoming a nuclear-armed state, but is that what her leaders want?

If and that is a BIG if Iran is attempting to develop a nuclear weapon who can blame it? It is surrounded by an enemy, the most powerful in the world, the USA or regimes that it totally controls.

Iran has on many occasions, as the article points out, stated that it is neither developing nor seeking to develop nuclear weapons for the defence of its country. The USA doesn't believe Iran. It would appear neither do the members of the UN Security Council which have repeatedly slapped sanctions against it, isolating it even more from the world.

Instead of pointing the finger at Iran the USA and the remainder of the UN Security Council should take a good look at itself. Russia and the USA still have a substantial stockpile of nuclear weapons capable of destroying the world several times over.

Its responsibility and commitment to the world is to dismantle its entire nuclear stock pile. The hypocrisy of the council is breathtaking; it disarms at a snail's pace and at the same time it has facilitated the nuclear arming of a further four countries; India, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel.

With the exception of North Korea it has done absolutely nothing to punish these rouge states so why are they picking on Iran? It is not a nuclear armed state and there are only the USAís suspicions as to what Iran is really doing to go by and what is that worth?

Why should the world believe the USA when on the pretext that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction it invaded and destroyed that country and later, to put it kindly, it found out it was wrong?

America has proved to the world that its word and trustworthiness has very little credibility.

I donít believe we have heard Iran lie to the world have we?

Iran is a one man band, that is where the distrust is, and so is nth korea. When Iran says it will obliterate israel you have to believe it.
And then there is the result of the last election....
Irans people would say anything in public, and another in private.
I wouldn't trust Iran as far as speaking truth goes.
No weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq, but were they used in Iraq, the kurds will tell you.

Ulis says the Iranians don't lie. In one respect, I would agree with him. When Ahmedinejhad says he wants to wipe Israel from the face of the earth, I believe him.

Thats the reason why the world is concerned about Iranian quest for nuclear weapons. And it is virtually the whole world that is concerned. Particularly Irans neighbours, the gulf states and Israel. Iran under Ahmedinejhad has made a LOT of very threatening statements. It also funds terrorism in the region.

In any case, once you allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons, Saudi Arabia and Egypt wouldn't be far behind.

A middle east full of nuclear armed states. What a great idea.

And as 579 said, Ask the Kurds whether Saddam ever had any weapons of mass destruction. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halabja_poison_gas_attack

Israel has at least 200 nukes and the means to deliver them yet Iran has yet to develop one.No country on the planet can threaten the USA since they account for 50% of the world's spending on arms.

Iran is no threat and nor is pissy North Korea. The USA had 800 Military bases around the planet. They dominate us militarily.

Another moslem state with nuclear weapons ?
This we just don't need.

As far as Iraq was concerned they were on a nuclear weapon path.
I remember seeing Saddam Hussian on a stage holding a red coloured
device and boasting that the west had tried to stop Iraq from getting
these nuclear weapon trigger devices but they got them anyway.

When it was obvious that they were to be invaded they appear to have
packed everyting up and moved it out of the country.
The presumption was they moved it to Syria.

The comments so far see matters entirely from the West's stand point Oh! And poor meek Israel.

What you don't understand (because you view the Middle East myopically) is the other side of the equation. Iran has seen what the USA and its mignons has done to Afghanistan and Iraq. Ahmadinejad as President is responsible to defend his country and its citizens. It isnít Iran who has marched his armies on the West killing its civilians in the hundreds of thousands is it?

India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea have demonstrated their nuclear capabilities why doesn't the USA pursue those countries where the proof is irrefutable?

The biggest piece of ignorance I have read is that Saddam Hussein HAD weapons of mass destruction and DID use biological weapons against the Kurds. This is true but who armed Iraq? Who backed Iraq when it was at war with Iran but America, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait? And what happened in the past doesnít excuse a Prime Minister of Britain to lie to the entire world.

Iran simply wants to be left alone but the USA has surrounded it and as is its want has held it to siege through sanctions. After 60 years of sanctions against Cuba which has been impoverished in the extreme but it is still standing tall one would imagine that America might try a new tactic. Look what impoverished Cuba is doing for Haiti compared to America.

Iran remains within its neighbourhood and it fears the USA and the West in the extreme and rightly so. Iran wouldm't provoke America and the West, by developing nuclear weapons it has neither the desire nor the measns. The West need not be frightened of Iran and as for Israel being wiped off the map of the world? Pure hyperbole; There isn't a single country in the Middle East with the capability or desire.
