So long as religion is excluded as a cause for atrocities, the analysis will be incomplete. The Indian example is pretty simple: modern knowledge is just a veneer over the traditional religion, which was used to manipulate the masses...as usual.
I saw a young priest on TV who said that the church's offences against children was "incomprehensible" to him. This is exactly the problem! Religion encourages ignorance and extreme confidence...together a wicked and dangerous combination.

I have not read this particular book by Nussbaum but I would seriously doubt that this is an accurate account of her argument. In her published work Nussbaum has mounted a consistent defence of the humanities - a defence that is very much at odds with what is presented here as her argument.
We need to be concerned about the notion that the legitimate role of universities is to focus on those areas of inquiry that can be readily commercialised. It is the decline in humanities funding that leaves democracies vulnerable for the humanities have an invaluable role in scrutinising human affairs.
