Greater public access to state information is good governance.

Sounds great.
The trouble with accurate information though is that it threatens the arbitrary decisions that are so common these days:
E.G. Privatisation "efficiencies", Desalination vs recycled water, Lake Eildon death pipeline, "clean coal", MyKey, "the Pacific Solution", Prohibition and of course Global Warming.)
Alas, for every bit of good clean information out there, there is a whole bunch of mis-informers out to distort policy for gain. FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt) campaigns have always been run, however now they go viral much more effectively due to a pre tamed WEB 2.0 audience.
All in all though, the WWW has saved us from the Murdochracy (thanks John!) for at least a while.
